Devon Life Village of the Year 2007
Voting has closed and nominations totted up and the five finalists have now been revealed, and South Zeal is one of them! The other finalists are Bishopsteignton, Lympstone, Dunsford and Clovelly.
The judges weren’t merely looking for the prettiest place. What they wanted was evidence of community spirit, a wide range of amenities on offer and residents who obviously cared for the natural environment. They also looked for architectural merit and character as well as any special charm or beauty in their setting. Villages gained extra points if the judges could detect a sense of vibrancy with any special initiatives or events being planned. Bonus points were also rewarded if there were clubs catering for a wide range of ages and tastes, if there appeared to be good communication of village activities through the local notice boards and if the community showed evidence of people helping each other out – shared lifts, for example.
Here’s what they said about South Zeal:
“The Post Office and village store in South Zeal was particularly impressive, with a coffee lounge, excellent notice board, and well stocked shop with delicatessen counter. This is a village famous for its Dartmoor Folk Festival and we heard that it also hosts a beer festival and a jazz festival along with many other events, clubs and activities for all ages. We found an excellent walks booklet in the distinctive St Mary’s Chapel and received a friendly welcome at the ivy-clad Oxenham Arms.”
Thank you to everyone who sent in a nomination and we can find out which of the finalists has been declared the Devon Life Village of the Year 2007 in the September issue of Devon Life (out on 25th August). Fingers crossed!!
