Easter Foods
Why does Father Christmas deliver Easter eggs?
This may well be a question posed by young children today when they hear parents in December telling others that such and such a supermarket or shop already has the Easter treat on sale.
Chocolate eggs available all through the year do nothing to diminish the demand as Easter approaches and while buns and eggs dominate the shops at this time of year they are by no means the only Easter food that can be enjoyed or has a folklore purpose.

At a review meeting held by the Highways Agency in Whiddon Down Village Hall on Wednesday 28th April, it was decided that additonal signage would be provided at Whiddon Down Junction. Although this has yet to be confrimed in writing, it is believed that the recommendations are:
Westbound signage will show:
Whiddon Down
Chagford
North Tawton
Sticklepath
South Zeal
Spreyton
Eastbound signage will show:
Crockernwell
Spreyton
Whiddon Down
Chagford
North Tawton
Drewsteignton
The signs should be in place within 4-5 weeks.
Thanks to al those that supported this campaign.
![]() | There has already been a report in The Beacon for this sold out, tremendously popular (and deservedly so) annual occasion. Action-packed, full of variety, so many well-now and loved people and all presented with so much pleasure - who wouldn’t succumb to all that enthusiasm? A couple of hours in another world!. You can view some pictures from the day by viewing the rest of this entry or clicking here |
In my day it was all terribly Tom Brown: vigorous cheering from the touch line; not a bad word for the opposing team; praise all round whether you won or lost; a communal hot shower (and, worryingly sometimes a visit there from the housemaster). Not quite so, South Zeal United v Exmouth on 10 March! A mighty barrage of hoarse and incomprehensible advice thundering across the field from the touch line by various people from the opposing side, and not a blind bit of notice taken as far as I could see by the team to whom it was addressed. I am not surprised really, there was enough advice to produce a white paper. | ![]() |
As summer approaches, the 30th of April, Walpurgis Night the eve of May is when the Queens of winter and summer battle with gorse clubs and witches meet on one of their two main Sabbats. Flora, ancient Sabine goddess of spring and flowers, youthfulness, and sex, encourages a night of earthy celebration. Maeve, the Celtic Queen Mab of the Fairies, invites dancers to pick a partner, then wander to the greenwood to make love at sunrise.
